Ganesha became the Isha or Lord of all other existing beings or “Gana”, after he won a contest from Kartikay, his brother. When he got a job of racing around the universe, he did not begin the race unlike his brother, Kartikay, but only walked around his parents, Parvati and Shiva, who were the origin of all existence.
Several stories also account how Ganesha got his famous elephant head. According to one story, Parvati created Ganesha without the presence of Shiva to protect her quarters. When Shiva wished to meet Parvati, Ganesha did not allow it and thus Shiva cut of Ganesha’s head. Later Shiva brought back Ganesha to life and gave him an elephant’s head because he could not find any other head.
